Your 40s aren’t about doing more—they’re about doing what actually matters.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to “get your life together,” this is your reminder that you don’t need a complicated routine or a complete life overhaul.

You need a few simple habits that support your energy, your mindset, and your daily life.

In this post, I’m going to share 8 habits that have helped me feel calmer, more confident, and more in control—without burnout or extremes.

I’ve realized in my 40s that the goal isn’t to do everything—it’s to do the right things consistently.

8 Simple Habits That Make Your 40s Feel Calm, Confident, and In Control

1. I Move My Body Every Day (But I Keep It Simple)

I’m not doing intense workouts every day.

Some days, it looks like:

  • A walk after I eat
  • Light strength training
  • Stretching

Other days, it looks like:

  • A walk after I eat
  • Zumba Toning class

Other days, it could be:

  • Mowing the lawn
  • Weed wacking
  • Gardening
  • High Fitness Class
  • Hiking
  • Dancing

That’s it.

Moving your body daily—even in small ways—keeps your energy up, your mind clear, and your body strong.

As a side note, have you heard of the jumping craze? Apparently people are doing 100 jumps in the morning and having great results. If that sounds like something you’d like to try, try it out! Simple and fast.

Consistency matters so much more than intensity.

2. I Focus on Protein, Water, and Simple Foods

I don’t overcomplicate food.

I just make sure I:

  • Get enough protein
  • Drink mostly water
  • Eat simple, real foods

One of my favorite easy habits is adding protein powder to my breakfast—it keeps me full longer and helps me avoid that mid-morning crash.

I eat a lot of bananas, oranges, blueberries (I keep a Costco sized bag of frozen blueberries on hand in case I don’t have fresh fruit available) and strawberries (when they are in my garden).

I also eat a lot of sweet bell peppers, fresh peas, broccoli, and I’m about to eat a lot more salad because I’ve got lettuce growing in my garden this year!

Keeping frozen fish (tilapia or salmon) and frozen chicken on hand is something else I do. I buy those from Costco as well. Even getting a $5 rotisserie chicken from Costco is another great tip – there’s so many things you can do with that!

Chips and hummus is one of my favorite go-to snacks.

Simple nutrition = better energy = better everything.

3. I Keep My Routine Easy (So I Actually Stick to It)

I don’t have some long, perfect routine every week.

I keep things pretty simple. I plan out certain tasks on certain days so I know what to focus on that day.

If it’s planned out, I’m more likely to do it and I don’t have to try to talk myself into doing it.

I already know what’s coming up so it makes it easier to get the important things done.

And, of course, other things will come up, so I know to be flexible with my schedule.

For example, just the other day I was asked to present at a Junior High career day, so I shifted what I had planned for that day and presented at the Junior High. It was nice to mix my day up.

Since I don’t have a 9-5 job, having an advance plan definitely helps me get more done. And, no, I’m not perfect.

Tasks I do daily (the garden one is of course only during the warmer months):

  • Prayer
  • Scripture Study
  • Eat all 3 meals
  • Go for a walk after at least one meal
  • Check on my garden

Typical week:

Sundays:

  • Church
  • Scripture Study with Friends
  • Potluck Dinner
  • Walk
  • Movie at my place with friends

Mondays:

  • Respond to messages/emails
  • Schedule content
  • Church activity

Tuesdays:

  • Respond to messages/emails
  • Blog tasks
  • Wealthy Tiffany content creation
  • Movie at the theater (not every week, but it is tightwad Tuesday, so it is cheaper on Tuesdays)

Wednesdays:

  • Respond to messages/emails
  • Video production
  • Amazon Influencer tasks
  • Dancing

Thursdays:

  • Respond to messages/emails
  • High Fitness or Hiking
  • Sauna
  • Blog tasks
  • Something fun at night

Fridays:

  • Respond to messages/emails
  • Zumba Toning
  • Sauna
  • Clean
  • Dancing/Date

Saturdays:

  • Lead Zumba Toning
  • Mow Lawn / Garden / Yardwork
  • Lunch with a friend
  • Activity with friends/Date

These are just some things that are on my list more often than not, it’s not all inclusive and it does change.

But, when your routine feels easy, and you already know what you’ll be doing, you’ll actually do it.

That’s the difference.

4. I Pay Attention to My Money (Without Obsessing)

I don’t track every dollar perfectly. I used to.

I used to update my spreadsheet at least monthly, if not more, and categorize all of my expenses. I actually enjoyed updating my spreadsheet.

But now that I’m a bit older, I’m familiar with what I spend money on. I have my bills and my investing automated. I’ve already hit my financial freedom number. I’m comfortable with what I spend my money on.

I like logging into the Empower app at least once a week. I used to do it daily. What gets monitored , gets improved.

I don’t need to spend that much time on my finances. I’d rather spend it on making more money or having some fun (although I do think making more money is fun… 😉 ).

I do:

  • Know where my money is going
  • Review my spending regularly in the free Empower app
  • Review my subscriptions
  • Make small adjustments when needed

That awareness alone creates so much confidence and peace. I’m not wondering if a bill is getting paid, if there’s enough money in my checking account or when to invest my money.

I keep my eye on my money and feel comfortable where I’m at.

You don’t need to be perfect—you just need to be aware.

5. I Keep My Space Clean and Calm

I’ve realized how much my environment affects me.

When my space is:

  • Clean
  • Open
  • Not cluttered

I feel better instantly.

I don’t try to organize everything at once—I just keep things maintained and declutter regularly.

Since I am an Amazon Influencer, I receive a lot of products from Amazon sellers. I make sure to sell larger items on KSL when I can and the rest of the items I keep in my guest room.

The way I think of these items is that it is inventory for my business. Otherwise, I would go crazy having all these items in my guest room.

But still, as of writing this post I am having a yard sale this weekend and can’t wait to get rid of all of those items!

I try to not to keep a hold of lot of extra items, but it isn’t easy. I have gotten better as I get older.

Small resets make a big difference.

6. I Protect My Energy (This One Is Huge)

This has been one of the biggest shifts for me.

I’m more intentional about:

  • Who I spend time with
  • What I say yes to (and what I say no to)
  • What & who I allow into my day

We don’t always have to respond to a message. We don’t have to yes to things that we don’t really want to be doing.

I try to think, will this bring my energy up? Will this be a good learning experience? Can my time be better spent elsewhere?

Less drama.
Less noise.
More peace.

Protecting your energy will change your life faster than almost anything else.

7. I Stay Connected to the Right People

I don’t need a huge circle.

I do have a lot of friends and enjoy meeting new people, but my close friends are a smaller group.

I also have friends for different aspects of my life. I have my ‘mastermind partner’ who I talk about business things with. I have a girlfriend who I talk about dating with. I have friends I talk about church related things with. And other friends for other topics.

I focus on:

  • People who support me
  • People who lift me up
  • People I genuinely enjoy being around

Even simple things—like walks, dinners, or quick check-ins—make a big difference.

It’s nice to have people to talk to about all different areas of life.

The right relationships add so much value to your life.

8. I Give Myself Grace

This one matters more than anything.

We all make mistakes. We all have negative thoughts about ourselves.

It doesn’t mean we give up.

It means we give ourselves grace. We take a deep breath, realize our mistake and realize we can still move forward.

We apologize to ourselves. We start to treat ourselves better.

We realize we do matter. We are daughters of God with high potential.

He knows we are going to mess up and He loves us anyway. We can also love ourselves.

I don’t try to be perfect.

I just:

  • Get back on track when I can
  • Keep going
  • Stay consistent overall

That’s how real progress happens, with grace.

Why These Habits Actually Work

These habits work because they’re:

  • Simple
  • Sustainable
  • Realistic
  • Easy to repeat

You don’t need 20 habits.

You don’t need a perfect routine.

You just need a few things that support your life—and the consistency to keep doing them.
