Your 40s can be one of the best decades to intentionally design the life you actually want.

By this point, you likely know yourself better than you did in your 20s or 30s. You’ve experienced enough of life to understand what truly matters to you — and what doesn’t.

The exciting part? You still have plenty of time to build the lifestyle you want.

Designing your dream life in your 40s isn’t about chasing someone else’s version of success. It’s about creating a life that aligns with your values, your priorities, and the things that bring you the most joy.

In this post, I’m sharing practical ways to start designing a life that feels meaningful, peaceful, and exciting in your 40s and beyond.

For me personally, designing my dream life started with realizing something important.

A dream life doesn’t have to be flashy.

For me, it includes things like spending time in my backyard, traveling when I want to, and creating work that gives me freedom and flexibility.

Your dream life might look completely different — and that’s the whole point.

Let’s talk about how you can start intentionally designing yours.

Focus on Your Real Priorities and Values

The first step in designing your dream life is figuring out what actually matters to you.

Not what society says should matter.
Not what your friends prioritize.

What matters to you?

For some women, that might include:

  • Having a peaceful home environment
  • Traveling regularly
  • Having time for hobbies and creativity
  • Financial security and freedom
  • Strong friendships and relationships

For me, it’s all of those items. I love having a clean, organized, peaceful home.

I love traveling, whether it’s a quick road trip or a longer vacation.

Having time to spend in my backyard, letting my creative juices flow with my blog, finance YouTube channel and the Amazon Influencer program.

Choosing to invest in the stock market and real estate for passive income and financial freedom.

Spending time with people I enjoy being around.

I also value my health, so I value exercise and healthy eating. I love taking a walk after eating, whether by myself or with others.

I created my own ‘job’ to align with my values and priorities.

When you know your priorities, it becomes much easier to design your life around them.

Build Financial Independence

Financial independence is one of the biggest tools that allows women to design the life they want.

When your finances are strong, you gain choices. You get options.

You can choose:

  • Work you enjoy
  • Flexible schedules
  • Travel opportunities
  • Less stress about money

Building financial independence doesn’t happen overnight, but small consistent steps make a huge difference.

Some ways to start:

  • Invest consistently
  • Increase your income over time
  • Track spending and automate saving & investing

It’s less about investing so you can retire, but more about the OPTION to retire.

We never know what can happen in life. We may not be able to work even if we plan to keep working.

Wouldn’t it be nice to not have to worry about the money aspect and enjoy life knowing we will always be taken care of because we set ourselves up for financial independence? I think so. Actually, I know so.

I don’t have to yes to something I don’t want to because of money. Money (or the lack thereof) doesn’t rule my life , I rule my money and therefore make the choices I want.

Financial freedom creates the space to build the life you truly want.

Try the “Ideal Day” Exercise

One of my favorite ways to think about lifestyle design is the ideal day exercise.

Ask yourself:

If I could design a perfect day five years from now, what would it look like?

Think about:

  • What time you wake up
  • What kind of work you do
  • Who you spend time with
  • Where you live
  • How you spend your free time

It’s a simple exercise, but it really shows what’s important to you. I’ve done this a few times throughout the years and while things change over time, it’s nice to take a few minutes to reflect on the future and the type of life you’d like to be living.

Some people just go through life on autopilot, not really thinking about creating their dream life. We will talk more about this in the next point.

We really can create our dream lives, even if we are starting over in our 40s.

It’s never too late to start on your dream life. If, today, we can think about what we want that dream life to be, then we can start taking the actions that will get us there, today.

This exercise often reveals what you truly want your lifestyle to feel like.

Once you have that vision, you can start building toward it step by step.

Design Your Lifestyle Intentionally

Many people live life on autopilot.

Thriving women in their 40s start making intentional decisions about how they spend their time.

Lifestyle design might include:

  • Creating flexible work schedules
  • Designing a peaceful home environment
  • Living somewhere that supports your lifestyle
  • Building routines that support your health and happiness

I love working for myself and creating my own schedule. That may scare the crap out of you.

I loved designing my own backyard and putting in A LOT of work to make it my ‘backyard oasis.’ You may hate landscaping and choose a townhome.

I’ve chosen to live in Utah where the majority of my family is, that way if I want to take a vacation I’m not ‘vacationing’ home for family stuff, I can travel where ever I’d like. You may want to be as far from your family as possible.

I’ve chosen to teach Zumba toning to help me and others stay in shape. You may hate dance workouts and love running.

Either way, we get to choose what really fits our lifestyle.

Small choices repeated over time shape our dream life, let’s create it intentionally.

Practice Gratitude for What You Already Have

While designing your dream life is exciting, it’s important not to overlook what you already have.

Gratitude changes how you experience your life right now.

Many women discover that they already have pieces of their dream life in place:

  • A comfortable home
  • Meaningful friendships
  • Financial stability
  • Opportunities for growth

While we may not think things are perfect or we have some other things we’d still like to accomplish, being grateful for the aspects of our dream life we already have will help us realize we are closer than we think and give us encouragement to move forward.

When I was living in my townhome, I really wanted to move into a single family home and have a yard of my own and all my own walls (if you’ve shared walls before, you know what I’m talking about).

But did I complain about what I didn’t have yet and just dream about my new house? Nope.

I was grateful for my small yard and put a little table and chairs out there and planted a few tomato plants and tulips. I took care of what I already had and appreciated it.

I also starting investing for a down payment on another property. I started looking at where I wanted to buy. I took action to get me closer to my dream life, while still being grateful for what I already had.

When you appreciate what you already have, it becomes easier to build an even better future.

Create a Plan for Growing Your Income

Lifestyle design often requires financial resources.

One of the most powerful shifts many women make in their 40s is focusing on growing their income instead of only cutting expenses.

Some possibilities include:

  • Negotiating raises
  • Starting side income streams
  • Investing in skills that increase earning potential
  • Building a business

When I was working at becoming financially free, I cut A LOT of my expenses. I even ate my food storage for awhile to save on my grocery bill. I shared my Costco membership with my roommate. I got really good at lowering my expenses.

While my expenses are still pretty low, I am focusing more on increasing my income. I like finding ways to make money.

Cutting expenses is very good, but if we make an extra $1,000 a month, that’s going to go a lot further than saving $20 a month on car insurance.

Even modest increases in income can dramatically improve your ability to create the lifestyle you want.

Final Thoughts

Designing your dream life in your 40s isn’t about perfection.

It’s about making intentional choices that align with your values and the kind of life you want to experience.

You don’t have to change everything overnight.

Start small.

Identify your priorities, improve your finances, and begin making decisions that move you closer to the life you want.

Your 40s can truly be the decade where everything starts coming together.
